Reconnaissance
Concept
Project Type Game Jam Game
Software Used Unity
Reconnaissance was developed for the 2019 Imperial War Museum Game Jam, held at Abertay University in Dundee.
Reconnaissance is a side-scrolling Mega Drive inspired game where your objective is to take images of soviet positions during the cold war in an SR-71 “Blackbird”.
The idea is to relay information about the cold war through gameplay, the better the player does, the more information is gathered. This information is all based on real-life events such as soviet troop movements in Cuba.
As the game is aimed at a younger audience (8+) we wanted to make a game that all players could learn very easily and therefore we based it off popular games such as Flappy Bird and Jetpack Joyride.
On Reconnaissance I was a designer, my duties included:
- Designing the game, mechanics and designing and creating UI.
- Managing the team and keeping everyone on track.
- Generally supporting the team in any way I could.
Gameplay
Keep your plane in the fly zone by using boosts of power (left click).
Fly through target zones (the blue boxes) and take images, if timed well enough you will capture the perfect image leading to more intel gained. Zones will change colour to visualize image quality. These being green for best, yellow for average and red for poor.
Avoid the no-fly zones. Fly too high and your engines will fail, in which case the pilot will need to rapidly apply boost to stay in the air (left click rapidly). Fly too low and Soviets will fire a missile at you and the mission will fail.
Without the boost, the plain will steadily drop, make sure you keep the boosts timed well to stay airborne and avoid the no-fly zones
