Game Design

On Forgotten Earth I was a designer, my duties included:

  • Keeping the project and team focused on meeting the project brief.

  • Designing/testing controls, player movement and game mechanics.

  • Designing the flow of the level and how we would introduce mechanics.

  • Creating puzzles that reinforced gameplay mechanics.

  • Developed and iterated on a basic narrative for the character and world.

  • Documenting the design within a game design document.

During this project I developed the following skills:

  • Designing and leading a game project as part of a small team.

  • A deeper understanding of pipelines and project management.

  • How to communicate with fellow team members and ensure everyone understands the vision of the game.

  • How to professionally communicate with industry mentors via emails, meetings and presentations.

  • The importance of source control and how to use it.

  • Using in-engine tools created by programmers and giving them constructive feedback.

  • Taking information gathered from playtests and using it to iterate on mechanics and other aspects of design.
